in the space in between.
Mixed State is a Brooklyn-based alternative jazz band with a distinct electro-acoustic sound. The quartet performs original music and aims to further the legacy of women jazz composers in every performance. No sound is off limits; the group blends together influences to create music that skips between genres such as classical, straight-ahead, and rock. There’s a degree of madness within the sound, played to evoke emotions as complex as the lives of listeners.
Mixed State’s debut album, ‘espresso depresso,’ featuring Gina Benalcázar-López on trombone, creates a story exploring the one and only consistent theme in life - inconsistency. It comprises of an arrangement of solo flute piece ‘Suite de Ballet’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams, compositions by Brandee Younger and Maurice Brown, an original questioning samba, and melodic punk-meets-jazz original compositions. Recorded at Rad Hazard Studios in NYC.
